Communications Tips
Contributing to the public interest compels the Hauser Group to offer free communications tips to progressives who are trying to move their messages.
Good luck, and get heard!
Write quotes that are Quotable
Too often, quotes in statements and press releases are bland and careful. You don’t read many of them, because they don’t show up in newspapers. To get quoted, you have to be pithy, funny, biting, arch, anything but bland.
Don’t Just Blog There
If you have something to say, and you are blogging, that’s great. But if all you do is post on your website, you won’t get much action. In addition to posting every day, you should create a blogroll, comment on other postings, and join community sites such as Indie Bloggers.
Plan, Plan, Plan
Communications calendars keep you ahead of the game. Plan ahead. Parcel out your newsmaking opportunities. Look for major anniversaries or other noteworthy dates. Schedule announcements in slower news periods. Organize related activities together on the calendar to make the whole look larger than the sum of your parts. Stuff like that.
Read, Read, Read
You can’t communicate well unless you know what’s being communicated. So read – national newspapers, web sites, blogs. Set up a Google News Alert. And if you are on the road, read the local newspaper. There is no substitute for the local paper for understanding on-the-ground concerns, and trends in journalism.
